After graduating from high school, Dr. Burke chose to serve his country by joining the military. He eventually decided to trade his camouflage for a white coat and went to medical school at SUNY Downstate in New York then completed his residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Shadyside in Pittsburgh, PA.
